Thanks to everyone that came out for the 41st Hartland Christmas Bird Count that was held on Saturday December 19, 2015. We had 17 individuals in the field and one at a feeder to turn up 57 species. This is over our 50.1 species 41 year count average. Conditions were decent, although we had higher winds than usual. Open water was certainly the plus and the minus of the count this year. The plus side was the fact that there was lots of open water to look for waterbirds, the minus was gaining access to that open water. Highlights this year include a new species for the count in its 41 year history, a Turkey Vulture found by the Salminens (and nicely photographed for documentation!). We had a record high count for Sandhill Cranes this year at 402 individuals (previous high was 154 in 2001). On the down side, we missed Great Blue Heron this year, a species that we have had on over 75% of our past counts and strange with all the open water that we could not turn one up.
