Greetings All,
The roost counts will end as of this weekend. No American Robin flocks remain, with but a few scattered individuals found while conducting 10-minute point counts in the surrounding area. The high count this year exceeded 28,000+, topping the 27,000+ last year. I know count this does not include all of the birds in the roost, as I can see but a portion of the birds leaving from the best vantage point I have been able to find. Birds leaving the roost and traveling eastward and southward are beyond my range of sight. Still. I have learned a good deal about the migratory behavior of the species and others over the last three years by conducting the count. The Blue Jay count this year was disappointing; but there is always the chance I would miss the best couple of days of movement when counting only on weekends. I doubt I will continue for another year- though from the standpoint of arriving at a better long-term average it might be best. Guess I will have to ponder this some yet.
